save weight by using trekking poles instead of tent poles

I didn't get mine from Majors Surplus, but it is the same tent, so I will gladly review. I sort of wish it were the old version so I could have a detachable rain fly. This one has a connected fly, but it seems a little smaller. The weight isn't bad if you aren't into ultralight. You can save some weight by using lighter line and aluminum stakes. I also found that this tent is a good alternative to the expensive tents designed to work with trekking poles. This tent works great with trekking poles, which means less weight yet. Most tents that work with trekking poles are way more expensive. I used a hose to simulate rain, and it beads off quite nicely.

Perfect Backpacking tent with two mods.

Ok, my friend and I just received this tent, fast shipping and good service. Now, first, this is not the older version of this tent that was made from canvas. It is much lighter treated nylon. It seems like the same material my USGI nylon treated poncho is made from. The floor is treated much heavier than the sides and the roof. However, during the test pitch of the tent it did rain and the water beaded right off the top and sides great. The side screen vents that are closed with Velcro are a nice addition to the tent, they work great. I would recommend buying a 5 x 7 nylon tarp from Walmart for 10 bucks for a footprint to protect the floor of the tent. The grommets line up perfectly with the floor of the tent so the tent stakes can hold both in place well. I also switched out the original stakes with aluminum ones as the original were steel and heavy. Now the weight of the tent with the footprint and new stakes comes in right at 4 pounds, good backpacking weight. Since the material is like a rain poncho I am not going to worry about a rainfly. This is a great buy and with a little modifications, stakes and ground tarp, it is a perfect backpacking tent.

I haven't used it in the woods yet but I set it up upon delivery. Quality construction. Fairly easy to set up. Good pegs included. There are netted vents at both peaks. Should be good to go.
